Book one in The Viper Series

“You and I know I can’t say no.” I swallow my fear and allow my eyes to fall down to his chest, I can’t bear to look at him. “And I can’t lose you.”

Joely Gilbert, one of two head Viper Girls for the club, strives to maintain a double life both full of deceit, betrayal, sex, lust, and fear. She knows the rules of the club and the way the boss works like no other, but she is the one breaking everything she knows in order to keep the new life she has. After running from her past, she’ll do anything to stay away from it. It’s what makes her perfect for the job. It’s what makes her normal.

Everyone has a story when they arrive at the doors of The Viper Rooms.

It’s this that binds clients and Viper Girls together. Each want to forget, each want something to remember, to feel, to lust over. The Viper Rooms gives the exclusive a time in their life to get the things they need from a club devoted solely to them. No strings attached, no questions asked. But what lies beneath the surface can’t always be stopped. It can’t be silenced forever.

And Joely’s one of the girls who knows that more than anyone else.

What happens when her facade starts to break? What would Joely rather give up; the man who wants to save her, but could die trying, or the life that could ultimately kill her?

Is pleasure worth the pain?

I have a policy of not looking at reviews of books before I read them. I like to form my own opinions. As it turns out, the low ratings on this book are almost identical to mine. The editing needed to be MUCH better. The word usage would then have been corrected (wrong word used or missing words, etc.). But the one review that got me was the fact that the possibility of an undercover operation to bring the madam down was not even thought of. I'd held out hope and at the end thought I was going to get it, but nope just another trumped up escape scene. I'm not really convinced at the 'love' the 2 characters supposedly had. On top of all of these glaringly obvious errors and poorly written words was the fact that the characters were very immature. A life as hard as Joely had SHOULD have aged that poor young girl.

I'm just glad I'm not even TEMPTED to continue reading the series, but still feel like I've been cheated my time spent struggling through this mess.

Saturdays At The Viper Rooms Book one in The Viper Series edition by KirstyAnne Still Amy Moore Romance eBooks Reviews

The "high class call girl who rarely has actual sex" is an odd new trope in New Adult romance, especially among those trying to be "edgy" or show how "broken" their female mains are (this is the third time I've run into this situation this year). In this view of the world, rich and powerful men (who also happen to be charming and handsome) will spend tens of thousands just to be alone with beautiful women, rarely expecting sex.

I mean, this COULD be a thing, but it certainly doesn't match my experience of human nature.

Anyway, Joely is one of these kinda-but-not-really prostitutes. She has signed a six-year contract with the Viper Rooms, where men can have all their fantasies met but choose mainly to limit themselves to drinking, dancing, and conversation.

A contract that requires you to break the law is, by its very nature, unenforceable. This is exactly what a contract to escort would be in the state of New York. Despite coming from resources and having a secret boyfriend who owns a successful multi-state law practice, Joely feels trapped by her contract (and her boyfriend agrees, which is completely confusing!). The reason she gives is that Clara (her boss, played in high melodramatic villain style) is totes evil and would punish her. But given that we never see Joely even TRY anything, this is hard to accept. If all the women are prisoners and there against their will, how could Clara hurt them all for going to the police? If the women had been in the country illegally, Clara's power over them would make sense. But these are all beautiful women from seemingly affluent backgrounds (one of Joely's childhood friends is an executive capable of bidding $150,000 for an evening of female companionship -- sexless, of course).

The fatal flaw in the book is that Wells never seems sure what Joely actually thinks of the Viper Rooms. We're told she always knew it would destroy her, that she enjoyed it until she met Jace, that the job saved her -- from page to page it is completely different. Does she love her job or hate it? Every chapter seemed like a total reset.

The writing isn't good at all. There are distracting injections of British English (like "bum"). I understand that the writer herself is English, but given that the story is in 1st person and the narrator is from Florida, it's distracting. Additionally, Wells uses lots of words in ways that aren't quite right -- like she wrote the basic story and then self-consciously attempted to "upgrade" the vocabulary without having a solid grasp of what the words meant. There are some sentences that don't make sense even after reading them several times.

Here is one example "Sure, it's large, but the second floor is buried into the attic, so it eludes me every time to believe I'm not in a small mansion in the Hamptons." After reading this three or four times, I asked someone to help me understand what the author was trying to say here. Is the attic in the second floor? And does she mean that "not believing" is what is "eluding" her? Or does she mean the second floor is "eluding" her and that it is causing her to conclude that she is not in a small mansion? Confusing constructions and misused words like this are scattered throughout the novel. There are also many basic errors in grammar.
Interesting read about young women who are tricked into becoming high paid "viper girls" after they run away from home. The main character falls in love with a rich client and all kinds of trouble results. Betrayal, love, lust and redemption all rolled into one.
I liked the story but this and The Runaway Viper need an editor.. There were so many grammar and misuse of words.. I read so many books and it is really disappointing when something goes to print with so many errors.. It makes me want to make corrections and return to the author.. If you can get beyond the poor editing then is it a great story..
But I couldn't. There were quite a few grammatical and sentence structure issues but that wasn't the real problem for me. The story, the characters, the manufactured drama...it was just bad.

I felt nothing for these two main characters. Zilch. And if you feel nothing after reading for several hours...that's not a good sign. And the dialogue? Dear God the dialogue is so unrealistic especially Jace's. A real man would have gotten her out of there the second he fell in love. Not sweet talked her and blah blah blahed her to death. He was worse than a wet blanket.

And the whole breakup/fight scene? Anti-climactic. Again, potential that went nowhere.

And Joely's reasons for becoming a Viper Girl are so not even remotely warranting a six year contract. And Clara? One word. Police. How hard is that? You've got plenty of evidence, plenty of witnesses, plenty of...oh I don't know...common sense. Use it. Just get out.

This plot line could have been awesome but it feel flat. I won't be purchasing any more in this series.

So why not one star? Because I think 1)Ms. Still has potential but my guess is she's quite young and probably hasn't come into her own yet. 2)Her concept is somewhat new and holds the potential for a ton of drama. Just not the unbelievable drama in this book. 3)Anyone who takes the time to write a book deserves some kudos, Ms. Still included.

In summary, I won't write this author off because I do think she can be good as she stretches herself and matures in her writing. But I probably won't give her another go 'round for a few years.
You might like it if you like Shades of Gray, but if your more incline to like Robyn Carr or Barbara O'neal you won't. I find these types of books so disturbing that it is hard for me to even finish these books. I find that these types of books desensitize people's attitude about violence against women and makes people look away from those who actually have violence in there lives.
Actually, I'm surprised I finished this. Kept meaning to delete it; but, somehow ended up at the end of the book. Carly runs away from a mistake she made; and "commits" herself to the owner of the Viper Room. It's never very clear why she can't just walk away from her "contract". Yes, the madam is cruel and heartless; and she has her bluff in with the girls. But, it's like the author doesn't know there is law enforcement and witness protection programs.
